It's not BayWatch – it's real! All about Surf Lifesaving in NZ

Home

With the warmer weather we all look in the mirror and wonder if we'll fit into that bathing suit or bikini that was getting just a little tight last year!

However, whether or not we have put on weight since last season may end up being the most trivial thing to happen to us at the beach this season. While we worry about 10 pounds extra weight, there are notorious beaches - especially on New Zealand's west coast - which are little dethtraps waiting to grab the unsuspecting, or foolish, swimmer. It's not for no reason that a popular TV program highlights one of the most infamous - Piha Beach, just west of Auckland. And also the selfless men and women who man the lifeguard stations and boats, and who regularly put themselves in danger to rescue bathers.

These men and women, generally on a voluntary basis, spend their summer days, not patying it up, but looking out for others, keepin gthem from harm and pulling them out when they find it.
